When You Can't See Through The Fog

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="159" caption="Image by BrendonPG via Flickr"]Foggy morning/Hagley Park[/caption]

I've got a million things to do today...and not enough time to get it all done.

It's very foggy this morning--like pea soup, foggy. There is sun on the other side of the fog. I see it peeking through in spots.

It reminds me of life.

Sometimes things can look "foggy".  I wonder how in the world everything is going to work out? It's difficult to see into the future. But, then the SON peeks through the fog...and things start to take shape. This is not to say that everything works out perfectly, at least not by my standards. At least not by what I know. I don't (can't) always see the big picture. I can only see what is right in front of my face.

That is where trust comes in.

Sometimes, that is all I have to give.

Trust.

And really, that is all I need.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
   and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will direct your paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6  NIV

*beautiful sun through the fog

*quiet, early morning

*reading the Father's Day cards that the kids gave

*a happy heart

*a cold glass of iced tea

*anticipation

*opportunity

*freshly cut hair, doesn't it always feel and look better?

How are you blessed?

Happy Sigh

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]OISHI Green Tea[/caption]

Today is Friday. It has been a fun week.

My birthday. My son's birthday.

Today is sunny, after all the rain.

Things are good. Happy sigh.

Some days I stare up into the heavens... I really see the beautiful sky and puffy, cotton clouds .I watch the stars sparkle.

I really look at my half made bed with the beautiful white quilt.

I really feel the arms encircling me in a hug.

I really taste the orange and jasmine green tea.

I really smell the lavender in the dryer sheets.

I really hear the laughter.

Some days my senses seem so alive. I wonder what I'm like on most days? Are my senses dulled to the world around me? Am I on autopilot that I can't really appreciate what it is that I have?

I long to live this life...my life...with my eyes wide open. Open to all there is. All the things to be wildly thankful for.

As one of my favorite authors writes, "Life is not an emergency". Yet, so many times I choose to live the opposite.

Why do I rush through my days? What am I racing headlong into? So busy, doing what? Don't have time?

I need to live.

Now.

In this moment.

Do you ever find yourself wanting to slow down? Do you ever take the time to just stop what you are doing, and give thanks?

Rest For The Soul

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="137" caption="Image by marc falardeau via Flickr"]RELAX[/caption]

Rest.

Time slows.

I savor the moment.

Saturday morning.

Walking around bare footed.

Wearing sweat pants and an old tee shirt.

Coffee in a deep mug.

With extra creamer.

Quiet time.

Reflection.

A time to enjoy.

Love And Marriage

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Typical game contents and scoring example.[/caption]

Our love intertwined in the moments of the every day......

"Are you coming to sit with me?"

I will in just a minute.

"Do you want to play Boggle?"

Okay...but, you almost always win.

"No, I don't."

Yes, you do.

"Okay, so I do."

"Thank you for making lunch."

You're welcome.

"Do you want to ride into town with me? I need to get something at Lowe's."

Sure, can we get a coffee while we're out?

"I drink coffee. You drink creamer and mocha with a splash of coffee for flavor."

Do not.

"Do too."

I like mocha.

HE JUST WANTS TO BE WITH ME....ME.

OUT OF ALL THE WOMEN IN THE WORLD, HE WANTS TO HANG  WITH ME.

How cool is that?

Eucharisteo

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Jan and I made some vegan chocolate chip cooki...[/caption]

Eucharisteo--Greek.   yoo-khar-is-teh'-o. Verb. Definition: 1.To be grateful, to feel thankful. 2. Give thanks

In chapter two of One Thousand Gifts, Ann talks about eucharisteo. Eucharisteo is the key word. The meaning behind it, the challenge of this entire book.

To Give Thanks.

(pg. 30)"On this page Ann asks herself if she needs to see the world, visit the exquisite, before she faces eternity? Or isn't it here? Can't I find it here? (31) Isn't it here? The wonder? Why do I spend so much of my living hours struggling to see it?"

This is so true for me. It is easy for me to skim over the very real miracles of today, not seeing them. Blinded by the busyness of life, thinking I need to do something more. Something big. Something significant. Before I am witness to the incredible.Could it really be something as simple as giving thanks? Being grateful for what I have? Even if it is a simple thing...The simple things become the big things, if they are appreciated. If I remember to offer thanks for them.

(pg. 37) "What precedes the miracle is thanksgiving, eucharisteo, and it is a Greek word with a hard meaning that is harder yet to live. Do I really want to take up this word?"

Should I really take up the challenge of gratitude? Will it change me? Will my eyes begin to see the ways that God is saying "yes" to me, on a daily basis? Certainly it is true that God acts in big ways, when He chooses. But, isn't it just as true that God acts in small ways? The small things that touch us in the grind of the every day? Shouldn't I be as appreciative for the beauty in the quiet stillness of freshly fallen snow, as I am for the healing of a loved one? Shouldn't I thank Him for hugs from children that he has blessed me with? As much as I see him in the faces of the forgiven? Shouldn't the smell of freshly laundered towels be as heady to me as the view from a mountain top?

Isn't God big enough to have everything under control? But small enough to to have communion with me as I thank him for the warm chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven? Why does my eucharisteo have to be small? Or only for certain things? Can I not thank God for ALL he does? All the ways he blesses? Even when I don't understand? Even when things don't go "my way". Can I not thank him for being in control--even when I'm so out of control? For being sovereign when I can't even see a second into my own future?

And with that...the Father of Lies whispers in my ear. He spits out the word eucharisteo. A whisper of irritation. A scratch of ungratefulness. "You don't need eucharisteo. It's useless. God isn't listening." And I am taken back to the garden. In the beginning he convinced Adam and Eve that ungratefulness was normal. That it was okay. That what God gave them wasn't good enough...and with that they sunk their teeth into that glorious fruit. The same fruit that turned bitter and rotten in their mouths. Communion with God was fractured, and the ungratefulness started to fester. It has been that way ever since.

And yet...

I want to take the challenge....the dare....to give thanks. To live eucharisteo. To see with my own eyes the difference it makes.

Okay, People. This Is It!

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]mousetrap[/caption]

For the past week or so, on and off, I've been blogging about mice. The little field vermin have managed to find their way into my house. Notice I said MY house although they seem to think they have ownership too. My kids (and the cat) caught the one from last week and that is all wonderful and fine, but the furball had relatives...and they are many.

The other evening I was in the pantry looking for some ingredients, so I could whip together a dinner worthy of Taste of Home.....when I heard a scratch. A scratch nearby. I froze. Just then a teeny little head poked it's way out of a Walmart bag, that I have a pile of, on the pantry floor. I don't know who was more freaked out. Him or me?! After gaining my composure I stomped (so as to scare him away and not have him run up my pants legs or something) over to where I keep the glue traps.  I pulled one out and slapped it down on the floor. Some of you might think I'm cruel, but all is fair in love and war. This is war!

I'm still hearing scratching in the ceiling. I fear that I am going to have to suit up like a character from Ghost Busters, and trek up to the attic. It is unnerving to me....but a woman's got to do what a woman's got to do. The attic is shadowy and dark. The puny little light bulb we have up there is not enough. This will give the rodent army the advantage. I on the other hand, like to think that I am much smarter than they are. I can woo them with peanut butter and cheese. Think of it as their last meal because they are dead mice walking.

I assume that they will watch me from the shadows with their beady little eyes. I will tell them, "This house isn't big enough for the 200 of us. ( I really have no idea the number of mice in the attic. It could be 3 or 3 million, who really knows? They all look the same.) It's me against you varmints! I will throw down the gauntlet. They will squeak in fear. Or not.

The saga continues...

Precious Memories...And Sugar Cookies

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Floral sugar cookies.[/caption]

The young girl got off the school bus in front of the big farm house. She walked up the driveway, hearing the crunch of gravel beneath her shoes. She turned at the sidewalk that led to the tiny side porch. The door opened.....

The elderly lady stood at the door, smiling. As the little girl got closer she could smell cookies. Sugar cookies. The older woman knew that the little girl loved her home made sugar cookies, warm out of the oven. She ushered the little girl inside to have a seat at her worn Formica kitchen table. The kitchen was warm and cozy. The woman quiet and kind. The girl happily munched on cookies while telling the woman of her school day. The older lady nodded and smiled. The girl asked about the horses, that she could see from the kitchen windows. The grandmotherly woman told stories about her Petunia and Judd and their antics. Sometimes the girl ran through the backyard and over to the fence near the big, red barn. She liked looking at Petunia and Judd up close.

After the sugary snack, there was much to explore...and the woman always let the little girl explore. There was a parakeet to say hello to, in the living room. There were three steps to "no where" in the living room, near the back porch door. The girl imagined it was a secret hideout, instead of what used to probably be a back stair case to the upstairs that had long been covered up. Then there was the organ in the parlor. It looked pretty sitting in there. Formal and quiet. The kind woman even let the young girl explore her bedroom and tiny bathroom, with all the colors from decades past. The bedroom was small, but warm with braided rugs on the floor.

The little girl enjoyed her visits. Time passed, the girl got older, and her visits were more sporadic. In 1982 the older woman became ill. She went to the hospital. The little girl was now a teen. She saw her friend in the hospital bed. Someone had tied a bright pink ribbon in the elderly woman's snow white hair. A splash of color in an otherwise sterile room.

The little girl, was me. My friend was Mrs. Saylor. She was like a surrogate grandmother to me. To this very day when I make a trip back to the place of my youth, I cannot pass by her house without remembering her. She might be gone for many years now, but she lives in my memories....and in my heart.

Don't ever think that you can't make a difference in a child's life. I know you can...just like Mrs. Saylor.  All it takes is a cup of kindness, a heaping spoonful of time, a dash of a listening ear, and some really good sugar cookies to munch on.

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This...

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]A dish of funeral potatoes[/caption]

1. It must really be cold outside because I felt the chill as soon as I got out from under the covers this morning.I thought about not getting up...but, I'm needed so I threw back the covers and braved the day. Brrrr....

2. My feet are cold.

3. I suppose I should put on my fuzzy slippers.

4. I'm made hashbrown casserole this morning for breakfast.

5. It's now baking in the oven.

6. It smells really good..even though I had to cut onions and they made me cry. I look like I've been on a drinking binge.

7. The baking casserole is making me hungry.

8. The coffee is also smelling good this morning.

9. I'm still tired even though I just got up at 8.

10. Normally, I get up earlier...but, not today.

11. Snowy, wet weather makes a lot of mud. I said a lot. Did you hear me?

12. Mud that has found its way into my laundry room. A LOT of mud. Did you hear me again?

13. I guess they (whoever they are) call it a mudroom/laundry room for a reason.

14. I don't like a dirty, cruddy floor.

15. Especially on my bare feet. My cold bare feet.

16. How come it is most people wake up with their hair sticking up all over?

17. I hate people that wake up with good hair. It's a disgusting display of perfect.

18. I wish I was that disgusting person. Just sayin'.

19. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

20. That is hysterical. Really.

21. Sometimes I scare myself in the morning.

22. Not intentionally. It just happens.

23. I've got 20 minutes until "brunch" is done.

24. I should make good use of my time, and go get dressed.

25. That would be lazy of me to wear my pajamas all day um....yes, it would.

Thanksgiving Facts About Me

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]A domestic turkey.[/caption]

The odd. The unusual. And the downright scary.

1. My husband does the turkey. I am creeped out by the cold turkey skin. And if there are any pin feathers that happen to still be stuck on it....gag.

2. A bare naked turkey in the crock pot, oven roasting pan, or deep fryer....whatever. It looks creepy to me.

3. I don't like to know what the meat looked like "before".

4. That is the reason I could never own a beef cow. I would name it. I would pet it.  It would be my friend. It would make it difficult to eat. And I like hamburgers so....that just wouldn't do.

5. I really like pumpkin pie, or really any kind of pumpkin dessert. I like to buy pumpkin in a can. Too bad it doesn't grow like that in the garden:)

6. I also like green bean casserole, creamy corn, sweet potatoes, dressing, and apple pie....with vanilla ice cream.

7. I like too many of the Thanksgiving foods. It's a curse.

8. This isn't looking good.

9. I will have to do A LOT of T-tapping to make up for today. I wonder how much sweating I'll be forced to do to make up for the gluttony?

10. Of course, it takes 15 million hours in the kitchen for MAYBE 20 minutes of eating. That stinks. I think the cooking and baking should be an Olympic sport. Sort of like a relay race.

11. Then just when one is in a turkey induced coma.....

12. There is Black Friday.

13. Insanity.

14. I usually don't go anywhere near stores on this day.

15. But Brittany wants me to go with her this year.

16. God, help me.

17. I could be killed in a stampede.

18. I could end up on the 6'oclock news.  Black Friday death. It sounds like a plague, doesn't it?

19. In the meantime I will be thankful. Because I have a lot to be thankful for.

20. Counting my blessings.

A Foggy Freak Out

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="210" caption="Cover via Amazon"]Cover of "The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's ...[/caption]

Have any of you seen the Stephen King movie, The Mist?

I am a fan of Stephen King. Even though I think he is a bit "off". If you know what I mean. Like one can't write scary, suspenseful, creepy, stories without being a little cracked oneself. I like him anyway. Demented or not.

So anyway, back to The Mist.

It is foggy and thick as pea soup outside. I keep thinking that some sort of giant, spider monster is going to appear in front of the llama field at any moment. Of course I don't believe in huge, man eating spiders that emerge from the fog. Of course not. That would be silly.

My daughter had to go over to the barn to let Jazz out into the field. Jazz is out there somewhere. Poor horse. In the mist. Hopefully, not eaten by a mutant arachnid. Just sayin'.

I was relieved to see my daughter as she emerged from the mist. She was not running, so I assumed nothing scary was chasing her.

I'm straining to see ANY of my beloved llamas....I can't see past our front yard. Maybe they were breakfast for huge spiders. This makes me sad.

Isn't it weird what fog does to people? Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I am the only one freaked out by fog. I don't like not being able to see "what's out there".

I refuse to go outside. I think they can smell fear.

Wandering Into The Unknown

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Older refrigerator model, with freezer compartment[/caption]

I put it off as long as I possibly could. I didn't want to go there. But I had to do it.

A MOM'S JOB IS NEVER DONE...AND THE JOB CAN GET PRETTY GROSS!

Cleaning Out The Refrigerator 101

1. I've noticed for the past couple of weeks that leftovers have been piling up in the refrigerator.

2. Leftovers that certain people swore up and down that they planned on eating. Uh, huh.

3. Now said leftovers are either moldy, or rock hard and could be used as a weapon.

4. I found detox tea that I had made, well, I can't tell you when I made it. Um....nasty stuff after sitting in the fridge since before time began.

5. In my defense the tea had been shoved to the back of the fridge. Out of sight, out of mind.

6. This never happens to my sweet tea. It is gone in no time, and I have to make more. I'm so pathetic. Sugar, yes. Detox, no. Don't tell anyone.

7. Slices of pizza and old Subway subs do some really funky stuff if left to their own devices.

8. Cheese dip turns to glue.

9. Glue that sticks to you if you happen to get some on you. Not that, that happened to me.

10. The gag reflex is a marvelous thing.

11. How come mom's end up with this job? And most of the stuff "leftover" in there...wasn't even mine!

12. It was a little like Christmas.

13. A little "gift" all wrapped up in aluminum foil.

14. What will the surprise be?

15. Oh, wow. A piece of my son's birthday cake...too bad his birthday was on October 13th!!!

16. No. I am not THAT desperate for chocolate.

17. Thank goodness.

18. After ridding the fridge of all the nasty evidence of my family's slothfulness...

19. I wiped it all down with Clorox wipes. I love those things. Just sayin'.

20. Now, all is well with the world again. And the refrigerator is practically empty. Sigh. Time to start over.

Calling For Gray Skies and Cool Temps

1. I've always loved decorating.

2. Especially when the weather starts turning cool.

3. Blankets and quilts. Everywhere.

4. I lay them on the couch, chairs, stack them.

5. Can't have enough of them.

6. Candles.

7. I love "warm" scents.

8. Cinnamon, apple cider, pumpkin spice.

9. They smell good, but they make me hungry.

10. So then I want to bake.

11. Because of delicious smelling candles.

12. Go figure.

13. Apple pie, pumpkin pie, and maybe some home made chili.

14. Hot chocolate.

15. With fat marshmallows.

16. Or flavored coffee.

17. Getting ready to settle in for colder weather.

18. Movies and books for evenings inside.

19.Wrapped up in my thick robe

20. Fuzzy pajamas with fluffy slippers.

Life Is Good.

Happy Independence Day

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]A cooked hot dog garnished with mustard.[/caption]

Amid the potato salad, grilled hot dogs, parades, and fireworks...remember the men and women that are far away from home right now. That freedom to them means time in the desert, suicide bombers, and snipers---helping others learn to be free amidst the chaos. Don't forget to pray for them. They might be out of sight...but, shouldn't be out of mind. Freedom is never free. Someone always pays the price. God bless each of you in your service to our country.
Thanks to our military!!!
Happy 4th of July everyone:)
